The U-Haul company has made a business of renting trucks and trailers to Americans on the move for over 60 years. Their business model has been so successful that when a person in America thinks about renting a truck or trailer for either a cross town move or a cross country move, U-Haul is more than likely to be one of the companies contacted or looked at on the web. But for some Americans, the ability to rent a U-Haul trailer is restricted because of the type of vehicle they choose to drive because U-Haul will not rent a trailer for towing by a Ford Explorer.

History of the Ford Explorer and Firestone Tires

The history of tire blowouts and rollovers of the Ford Explorer is well known and occurred mainly on models produced in the 1995-2000 model years. While there were several lawsuits against Ford, there were also several lawsuits against Firestone and both companies paid out millions to settle numerous suits. During the investigations and research into the cause of the rollovers, there were many accusations and counter accusations made between the two companies and in many cases the impact these rollovers had, along with the resulting deaths, were lost on the consumer and both Ford and Firestone lost sales.

While there have been numerous studies and experiments on both the Ford Explorer and the Firestone tires that were associated with the rollovers of the vehicle, no single cause was ever identified. Rather, it seems that there were multiple causes and it was the combination of both the vehicle and the tire that made the risk the greatest in Ford Explorers equipped with a specific set of Firestone tires. The Firestone tires were found to have problems with tread separations and when this happened at highway speeds the results were often fatal. The Explorer was also susceptible due to suspension issues and subsequent models had the shocks improved along with other improvements to the suspension.
