Chance brings people together. In 1800, twelve year old Maria Bicknell travelled to East Bergholt in Suffolk to visit her grandfather the village rector. While she was there, the twenty-four year old son of the local miller happened to be at home. For the first time, Maria met John Constable.

John Constable

John was the second son of Golding Constable, a successful corn merchant at East Bergholt in the Dedham Vale of Suffolk. His elder brother being handicapped, John was expected to take over the family business but his passion for painting eventually won through and his father gave him an allowance to study art at the Royal Academy schools. Although he successfuly exhibited at the Royal Academy, after the youthful freedom of roaming the countryside to capture the natural beauties of the landscapes, he decided that this was the form of painting he wished to pursue. His modest, rural subjects were not however fashionable as collectors sought more dramatic depictions of the countryside.

In order to make a living, John was forced to take commissions to paint portraits, a task that he found "dull." One of his sitters was Harriet Rhudde, the aunt of Maria Bicknell.
