Everyone has seen the commercials claiming one can stain over paint. If the house is painted but stain is the look preferred, the nature of the two different coatings means staining over paint can't be done. Here's why.
- Definition of Paint: to cover over; to coat a surface or substrate with a protective and/or decorative coating
- Definition of Stain: to penetrate a surface or substrate; to permanently dye or alter the original hue
Paint effectively blocks the surface from allowing access to anything and that includes stain coatings. Stain must be able to penetrate evenly, otherwise it will come off after the first good rainstorm or drastic temperature change.
Commercials Have Advertised That it is Okay to Stain Over Paint
To stain over paint was a popular advertising gimmick used several years ago. It was initiated by a company well known for its successful line of stain products. This particular manufacturer also popularized an exterior paint product which was offered in their already well recognized stain color choices.
