Your wedding dress may be the single most important piece of clothing you will ever wear. The first decision you have to make is this: what do you want your dress to say about you? The dress is meant to personify the bride. Are you a hopeless romantic, a modern diva, or a classic beauty? Knowing what style of dress you want is critical when planning the rest of your wedding day.
Styles of Dresses
There are five main styles of wedding dresses: A-line, ball gown, mermaid, empire, and column. Each dress offers a unique shape and highlights different features of the body.
- A-line dresses are popular because they flatter most figures, including those of petite and full figured women. They slim the waistline, lengthen the body, and accentuate the bust. A-line dresses are great for hiding flaws. The bottoms of these dresses flow to the ground.
- Ball gown dresses are ideal for women who have thin hips and a full bust, are pear-shaped, or are full figured. These dresses are thought to be more formal. They are perfect for fairy tale weddings (think of Cinderella).
- Mermaid dresses highlight a woman’s curves, and are typically worn by more slender women. They are sexy, form fitting from the bust to the knee and flare out at the bottom.
- Empire dresses have a waistline or band below the chest. The rest of the dress flows down. These dresses usually have square necklines. Empire dresses are great for full figured women or women who are pregnant.
- Column dresses hug the body and show all curves, so they are great for women who are more athletic and toned. The dress itself does not really have a shape, it just flows down.
Fabrics Used in Wedding Dresses
While the style of the dress is important, another major factor is that of the fabric. Taffeta, tulle, and chiffon are a few fabric terms that may be useful when you are trying to pick out the right dress.
